Are Ballet Classes Right for You?
Ballet Classes for Students of All Ages
Finding the right dance class can be a challenge. Both children and adults can benefit from studying ballet.
Ballet dancing offers a unique combination of physical activity, creative expression, and socialization.
We think that ballet classes combine many of the things that both parents and kids want. Kids get an outlet for their energy and a fun way to express themselves. Adults can get a great workout and express their creativity at the same time.
Fun and Progress in Every Class
Classical ballet classes offer students of all ages a fun and challenging way to tone their muscles and learn what their bodies can do. With a unique combination of art and fitness, students learn to express themselves through movement in a safe and nurturing environment. Our experienced teachers will guide them each step of the way.
Pointe
Pointe work is for the more advanced ballet dancer and all students wishing to dance on pointe must be assessed for proper body alignment, core strength, strength of ankles, turnout, and feet strength. SODA Instructors personally assist each dancer at a fitting for their first pair of pointe shoes.
Benefits
Ballet is a dance discipline that helps children and adults learn how to coordinate their movements. Young children sometimes struggle with physical control and ballet can help them understand their bodies.
By toning and building core muscles, ballet instruction helps to improve balance – a key element of coordination. Students watch their bodies get stronger with every lesson.
We all need a way to express ourselves creativity and young children – whose brains are still developing – can benefit from learning multiple forms of creative expression. Adults need creative outlets too!
Ballet is a dance form that expresses emotion through movement. Since young children sometimes have difficulty controlling their emotions, ballet gives them a healthy outlet for emotions that can feel overwhelming.
There’s plenty of evidence that learning the habit of exercise and fitness at a young age helps kids lead healthy lives as adults. Adults may sometimes struggle to find fitness classes that they enjoy.
Ballet classes provide intense physical activity that still feels like a social and creative outlet. Both kids and adults can experience the satisfaction of seeing their bodies get stronger as they progress.
There are many times in life when we need to get up in front of a group of people, whether it’s presenting a book report in elementary school or delivering a presentation at a meeting. Confidence is the key to getting through those moments.
When kids study ballet, they become confident in their abilities to learn and grow. They’ll carry the confidence they build into every area of their lives, including home, school, and beyond. Adults can improve their self-confidence too!

FAQS
Young children can start ballet classes as early as age four. Children who are younger than four can sometimes struggle to follow instructions. The focus in classes for young children is on basic movements and principles. Adults of any age can also study ballet and often become skilled dancers.
Students should wear tight-fitting clothing. For girls and women, that usually means leotard and tights, or a close-fitting top and leggings. Boys and men usually wear leggings with a close-fitting top or singlet. You’ll also need quality ballet shoes.
You may want to come with a sweater or cover-up in case it gets chilly. Some people bring a water bottle and snack, although if your child is taking a class, you should make sure your child knows that they may only eat the snack after class and stop for a water break when the instructor gives them one.
There is a risk of energy with any physical activity. However, our experienced instructors will teach students the proper technique and form to minimize the risk of being injured.
Dancing en pointe requires a solid foundation of ballet training. In most cases, we don’t recommend that children dance en pointe until they are 12 or 13 years old. With older kids and adults, it requires two to four years of disciplined training to dance en pointe.
Most students do perform in recitals. We believe that the discipline required to prepare for a performance is beneficial for students of all ages – and that performing builds self-confidence, too.
